Ensure that the ingredients of the supplements are supported by a Third Party Certification. Even the most conscientious consumer can't judge quality with outside help. The best indication of quality is when an independent third party certifies the label's claims. These entitles check for contaminants, inspect manufacturing sites, test for accuracy in labeling and verify that the manufacturer follow FDA's Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for foods. The labels of reputable manufacturers carry a seal that says NSF (the non-profit NSF International). Usana's supplements have been rigorously tested and verified to assure the following:
- What's on the label is in fact in the bottle, in the declared amounts. (They should be listed similar to the nutritional facts label on packaged foods). Some supplements contain more of less of the ingredients stated on the label. You must be sure of the identity and amount of ingredients in your supplements if you want to be sure you're getting value for your money.
- The supplement must have good bioavailability. This is the availability of a vitamin to release, break down and absorb in the body. If a supplement does not break down properly to allow it's ingredients to dissolve in the body it means you won't get the full benefit of its contents
- Only use superior ingredients. Some supplements contain lead, mercury, other heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, molds, toxins or other potentially harmful contaminants. Also check for additives. Whatever you do not want in your food, you don't want in your supplements, such as fillers, artificial colours, sweeteners or preservatives. Safe manufacturing ensures a safe, sanitary, well-controlled and well documented manufacturing and monitoring processes. This is proof that the supplement manufacturer is quality-conscious and concerned for your well-being.
